The Enduring Appeal of Mechanical Keyboards

For writers, the mechanical keyboard represents an exquisite tool. While not essential for everyone, a thoughtfully crafted mechanical keyboard can transform a monotonous day of typing into a visually appealing experience. Given that I spend countless hours at my desk, having a keyboard that I genuinely enjoy using has become indispensable. Approximately two years ago, I acquired my first mechanical keyboard—the Keychron K2—and I have never regretted that decision. Keychron has established itself as a leading brand in the mechanical keyboard market, gaining recognition after its initial Kickstarter launch in 2017. Since then, the company has introduced a multitude of keyboard models (along with keypads) and various mouse designs.

Unlike many other electronic devices, owning a mechanical keyboard is relatively straightforward. This simplicity contributes to its allure. One simply unboxes the product, sets it up (the K2 includes small tilt legs that provide a more comfortable typing angle), and connects it. At this point, users have a couple of options. The K2 is equipped with a basic USB cable, but it also supports Bluetooth connectivity. For those who prefer a tidy, minimalist workspace, Bluetooth is likely the preferred choice.

While I remain devoted to my older Keychron K2, there are several upgraded and newer models worth considering. Over the past two years, Keychron has launched a variety of new keyboards, each featuring a wide array of functionalities and price points. The form factor often serves as a significant attraction. One particularly intriguing release, the Keychron K8 HE Wireless Magnetic Switch Custom Keyboard, boasts an all-wood body and an LED backlight, commanding a higher price of approximately $200. In contrast, the K2 is priced at $60. However, for those who appreciate its design, the investment may be justified.

For gamers, Keychron also offers the C0 HE One-Handed 8K Keyboard, a keypad designed for efficiency and speed, characterized by an industrial aesthetic. However, interested gamers will need to be patient, as this model is currently out of stock. The company has also enhanced its K, Q, and V series keyboards, with many models priced between $100 and $200, depending on their features.

One of the most attractive aspects of owning a mechanical keyboard is its versatility. Users can easily swap keycaps for a diverse selection (there is even a dedicated submarket for this) or create custom caps (though I have not taken that route). Additionally, the auditory experience is noteworthy. While some may find the pronounced sound of clacking keys off-putting, I personally enjoy it. In fact, the distinctive sound produced by these keyboards has become a significant selling point for many consumers, even making its way into ASMR videos.

For me, the most compelling feature of Keychron keyboards is their retro design. I have a deep nostalgia for vintage electronics, and Keychron effectively satisfies this longing. The keyboard is aesthetically pleasing, evoking memories of an earlier computing era when design was more utilitarian and less minimalist. When it comes to home office purchases, acquiring a piece of hardware that makes your desk resemble a time capsule from the 1990s is certainly a worthwhile choice.
