Data centers have garnered significant criticism. However, what if we referred to them by a different name? According to hinews, OpenAI is gearing up for a comprehensive public relations campaign following the midterm elections on Tuesday, as Democrats appear poised to regain control of the House of Representatives and potentially the Senate as well. Chris Lehane, the company’s chief global affairs officer, indicated to hinews that the midterms will serve as “a bit of a movie trailer for what you’re going to see in 2028,” when he anticipates that artificial intelligence will emerge as “the issue” in the presidential race.
OpenAI aims to shape the discourse surrounding AI in the future, with Lehane outlining various initiatives, including the establishment of AI “speed limits,” efforts to help individuals perceive AI as a tool for empowerment in their everyday lives, advocating for the United States to take a leadership role in formulating global standards, and notably, rebranding data centers as “AI compute campuses.” Furthermore, Lehane characterized the dialogue surrounding data centers—a discussion that has prompted Amazon and Microsoft to announce they will cease using non-disclosure agreements in their dealings with local authorities—as “good and healthy.”
“Communities should hold companies responsible and accountable so they truly derive transformative benefits from these projects,” he stated.
