On Monday, Google unveiled its latest addition to the Fitbit product range, the Fitbit Edge, a new wearable device that occupies a space between the Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch. Priced at $179.99, this device merges the sleek design of the Fitbit Air with an OLED display that allows users to access map directions, notifications, weather updates, and music controls.
Similar to the Pixel Watch and Fitbit Air, the Edge is compatible with Google Health Coach, which is powered by Gemini. (A Google Health Premium subscription is required to utilize this feature.) The Health Coach can analyze your fitness, health, and medical data to create personalized weekly routines and workout plans, adjusting them according to your schedule. Additionally, it includes Google’s Health Guardian feature, designed to detect significant changes in health metrics over time, including those related to blood pressure and insulin resistance. (These features were initially announced during the Pixel Watch 5 launch in August.)
According to hinews, Google asserts that the Fitbit Edge can automatically identify and log up to 100 different activities, such as running, cycling, and walking. The company elaborates that it utilizes contextual information from your movements to determine the activity being performed and incorporate it into your weekly fitness goals. Furthermore, the device supports over 50 exercise modes and can provide on-screen prompts during workouts, offering reminders to either intensify your efforts or take a break.
The Fitbit Edge boasts a built-in GPS that is claimed to be 40% more accurate than that of its predecessor, enhancing the tracking of outdoor runs. Google also states that sleep-stage detection has improved by 15% compared to earlier models, enabling the device to deliver more precise sleep summaries and coaching advice. Meanwhile, the battery life is rated for up to seven days on a single charge, and the wearable is water-resistant up to 50 meters.
The Fitbit Edge is currently available for preorder through the Google Store, with general availability scheduled for October 27. Available color options include Obsidian, Fog, Olive, and Canyon. Additionally, a Stephen Curry Special Edition is offered at a price of $219.99.
