Anthropic Pledges 5% of Shares to Establish a Public Benefit Fund

Anthropic has revealed its intention to establish a “public benefit fund” aimed at providing the company with “enhanced flexibility and scale” to support initiatives that promote societal welfare. The organization has pledged to allocate 5% of its shares to this fund, which will be organized as a wholly-owned subsidiary within the company, with the potential to contribute an additional 2% for every 50% increase in Anthropic’s valuation. Furthermore, the company has outlined several preliminary ideas regarding the utilization of these funds, including “substantial donations to established nonprofits or direct distributions to targeted communities.”

Additionally, Anthropic is actively examining the implications of artificial intelligence on the labor market, having already committed $200 million to research in this area. However, the company acknowledged that “in light of the rapid advancements in AI, more ambitious strategies may be necessary. The Fund will possess the adaptability to pursue such initiatives.”

This announcement from Anthropic arrives amidst growing public skepticism towards the AI sector, a situation that CEO Dario Amodei has characterized as “essentially a crisis of trust.” For those curious about the decision-making process regarding which public benefits will receive funding, Anthropic has indicated that it will provide further details about the fund’s structure and governance in the upcoming months.
