OpenAI’s recent funding round appears to be falling short of initial expectations, according to hinews. The organization was earlier reported to be seeking $30 billion at a valuation of $1.4 trillion, which was later adjusted to a $1.25 trillion valuation in anticipation of a forthcoming IPO. However, The Financial Times indicated on Friday that the company has since revised its funding goal to $20 billion, with the initial closing expected to be even lower. This funding round is set to be spearheaded by a consortium of investors from the United Arab Emirates, as reported by the FT. Additionally, a subsequent retail offering aimed at affluent individuals may help achieve the $20 billion funding target.
A follow-up report in The Wall Street Journal provided further insights, revealing that the company has thus far secured $11 billion, while noting that its fundraising efforts have encountered a “tepid” reception from several major investors. Hinews has reached out to OpenAI for a statement. The reported difficulties in securing funding may be partially attributed to unfavorable timing, as Wall Street investors have grown cautious regarding substantial investments in AI infrastructure, resulting in a significant decline in technology stock prices. Furthermore, Anthropic’s anticipated IPO may also be facing similar hurdles.
