Following the recent bankruptcy filing by the chatbot startup Character.AI, numerous employees are poised to secure positions at Disney. Karandeep Anand, the former CEO of Character.AI, has recently taken on the role of Chief Technology Officer at the entertainment conglomerate. Additionally, Character.AI previously announced that Disney had consented to acquire certain assets for a sum of $20 million.
A legal document uncovered by Bloomberg has shed light on the specifics of the arrangement between Character.AI and Disney, indicating that Disney intends to extend job offers to at least 60 employees from Character.AI, which constitutes the majority of its workforce. The estimated annual compensation for these positions is projected to be around $60 million. Furthermore, the filing notes that a significant portion of the Character.AI staff who received job offers from Disney have accepted them.
However, it is important to note that this arrangement is classified as a stalking horse bid, meaning that another entity may present a higher offer. The document also highlights that, despite having a “large and engaged user base,” Character.AI has faced challenges due to elevated operational costs and “potential litigation-related liabilities and regulatory engagement.” Notably, the company is currently embroiled in a lawsuit initiated by the mother of a 14-year-old boy who reportedly became fixated on one of Character.AI’s chatbots prior to his tragic suicide; in addition, it is under scrutiny from government investigations concerning child safety issues.
