Figma Unveils New Features to Transform Agent Workflows on Its Platform

Design platform Figma has unveiled a new Markdown-based editor aimed at defining a company’s design framework, incorporating design and code libraries, and facilitating integration with the Payload headless content management system during its inaugural Config event in India. Through these features, the company seeks to establish guidelines for both its own and third-party agents to better adhere to a brand’s design principles while utilizing AI. The newly introduced Figma Specs feature serves as a Markdown editor that allows users to articulate their design language in an accessible manner. This document can act as a reference point for teams and agents engaged in design work within Figma. Specs can function as an independent file in Figma or coexist within the design canvas. In addition to its role as a text editor, users can reference other Figma components, including elements on the canvas, and embed FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs.

Furthermore, teams can provide additional context regarding design, encompassing design libraries, code libraries, and guidelines to effectively manage the design system’s context. Agents can also utilize this centralized system to ensure compliance with established rules. Image Credits: FigmaImage Credits:Figma

In the past week, the company expanded access to its canvas agent for a broader user base. However, recognizing the unpredictable nature of AI, Figma is equipping users with tools to guide it toward more reliable outcomes. The company also introduced its code layers feature, which integrates coding into designs on the canvas to create more interactive prototypes. This feature was initially announced in private beta in June and is now being made available in public beta at the India event, allowing more users to experiment with it. Users can request the agent to convert a design into code or modify specific parts of the code to refine a prototype. Image Credits: FigmaImage Credits:Figma

“We envision Figma as the platform where software teams converge to determine what they build and ship. One of the significant changes brought about by AI is the enhanced capability to create,” stated Loredana Crisan, Figma’s chief design officer, according to hinews. “Currently, there are 17 times more lines of code being generated than in the past. Yet, when examining releases, there is only a 1.3-fold increase. Much of this code is not necessarily intended for shipping but is primarily created to explore the product’s potential. It is fundamentally designed to innovate.”

The company also announced support for over 20 new tools through its MCP, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and the Indian AI startup Sarvam. Last year, Figma acquired the open-source headless CMS Payload, which is now being integrated with its Figma Make product to facilitate the generation of dynamic websites and direct content management. The company reported that Payload’s downloads have surged sixfold over the past year. Figma established its first office in India late last year, focusing on sales, partnerships, go-to-market strategies, and product support. The company indicated that India represents its largest user base outside the United States, noting that the platform collaborates with 40% of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
